Fave Apps: Wispr Flow — Talk Instead of Type, Everywhere
Wispr Flow turns natural speech into polished text in any app — about 4x faster than typing. Here's why it's become a daily driver at Pixelocity.

What it is
Wispr Flow is AI voice dictation that works inside any app — email, Slack, docs, browser, even the prompt box where I talk to Claude Code. You speak naturally (rambling, filler words, mid-sentence corrections and all) and Flow transcribes it instantly into clean, polished text. Not a transcript of your mess — the message you meant to write.
Why it made the list
The numbers first: Wispr claims around 220 words per minute versus roughly 45 typing — about 4x faster. That matches our experience. But speed is only half the story:
- Auto-editing — it strips the "um, actually, wait, scratch that" and writes what you meant
- Works everywhere — one tool, every text field on your computer and phone. Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android, with syncing across devices
- Personal dictionary — it learned "Pixelocity," "LeadPixl," and our client names on its own
- Tone matching — a Slack message comes out like a Slack message, an email like an email

The unlock I didn't expect: most of what I "write" all day is actually talking to AI — prompts, briefs, instructions to Claude Code. Speaking those instead of typing them means the thinking flows at the speed I think it.

Should you grab it?
If you write more than a few emails a day, yes. There's a free trial (no card required), so the experiment costs nothing — install it, force yourself to dictate for two days, and watch typing start to feel like writing with a quill.
The bottom line: Wispr Flow is the rare tool that makes everything else faster, because every app you own just learned to take dictation.
How it compares
Dictation is not one category. Wispr Flow competes with the free tool already on your Mac or phone, with the old professional standard, and with meeting transcribers that people sometimes confuse with it.

The short version: if you want a literal transcript of a meeting, Otter (or Granola, which we prefer) is the tool. If you want the message you meant to type to appear in whatever app you are looking at, that is Wispr Flow.
Pricing and limits (at the time of writing)
- Free plan: a weekly word allowance (Wispr has kept it around 2,000 words a week), enough to find out whether dictation sticks for you.
- Flow Pro: roughly $12 a month billed annually, or about $15 month to month, for unlimited words. Wispr changes plans periodically, so confirm on wisprflow.ai before you buy.
- Apple Dictation is free. Dragon Professional is a one-time license in the hundreds of dollars, or a subscription for the Anywhere edition. Otter has a free tier and paid plans starting under $20 a month.
Limitations we have run into:
- It needs an internet connection; the processing happens in the cloud, so it is not the tool for a plane or a dead zone.
- The auto-editing occasionally over-corrects. If you dictate a deliberately blunt sentence, check that it did not get softened.
- It is English-first in practice. The 100+ language support works, but the polish is best in English.
- It is not a meeting recorder. It captures what you say, not the other side of the call.
- Anything you dictate leaves your machine for processing, so read the privacy policy before dictating client PII or anything under NDA.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wispr Flow free? There is a free plan with a weekly word cap and a paid Pro plan for unlimited use. The free plan is enough to test the habit for a couple of weeks.
Does Wispr Flow work on Windows and Android? Yes. It started on Mac and iPhone and added Windows and Android, with the personal dictionary syncing across devices.
How is Wispr Flow different from Apple Dictation? Apple transcribes exactly what you said, filler included. Wispr rewrites it into the message you meant, matches the tone of the app you are in, and learns your vocabulary.
Is it accurate with names and jargon? In our use it picked up Pixelocity, LeadPixl, and client names on its own within a few days, and you can add terms to a personal dictionary.
Does it replace a meeting notes tool? No. Pair it with a meeting recorder such as Granola; Wispr is for writing, not for recording other people.
